The purpose of a secondary combustion chamber in an incineration unit is to prevent the release of certain chemicals emitted by the incinerator from entering the atmosphere. Complete post-combustion of the combustion gases, and thus also residual organics and entrained solid particles, happens in the secondary combustion chamber. Air addition and fuel, if required, will be injected to maintain an oxygen content and temperature that will ensure complete thermal destruction.
